「Degradation and stabilization of elastomers」
Prof. Dr. Ulrich Giece
A long time suitability of rubber products is an important factor concerning sustainability. Detailed investigations on aging mechanisms of NR and synthetic rubbers are performed using low field NMR, Chemiluminescence, IR-Spectroscopy and physical measurements. Allylic protons and chain branching are limiting factors. Furthermore the influence of crosslink density in sulfur systems and peroxide crosslinking is investigated. Residual peroxide content in cured EPDM shows a high effect on the stability., which is quantified for prediction of stability. The spatial evolution of chemical changes (DLO-effect) is an additional important factor. Concerning stabilization the efficiency of different antioxidants are determined.
